We are indeed making a stance about how people should not give up so much power to monopolistic corporations.
I still agree with your other toot about UX, and I think FLOSS teams are really lacking in this area, compared to how they are able to compete with big corps functionnality-wise.
I know UX is hard and a distinct branch of software dev. We need more UX specialists in FLOSS communities
You are absolutely right, but I think it is true that Google, Apple et al are explicitely trying to enforce their own views of how technology should be used, and making it increasingly harder to have full control over your own devices.
Most teenagers nowadays think the internet is just made of the apps they can download on their phone's official store. In their minds, search engines are just a tool for boring homework
@AugierLe42e @praveen Conventional social media is actively trying to educate their users to computer-illiteracy
@bjoern I have to confess that I'm still using Chromium (on Linux) with Google sync enabled because I made the mistake to rely too much on it in the past...
Time to move on I guess
#Google starts to lock out non-official Chrome builds like #Chromium. The #web is a cricual infrastructure these days and as such we need independent browsers and rendering engines!
If you care about the free and open web you shouldn't use Chrome based browsers.

I mainly agree with the linked thread and frequently laugh at people that want to use blockchains everywhere (eg Jack Dorsey)
However, I think there are legit applications to blockchains, and that decentralized banking is one of them. We /just/ need to fix the proof of work issue.
Verifying transactions is not what consumes most of the energy. The competition between transact. verifiers (aka miners) does. The worst part is that apart from PoW, all these computations serve no real purpose
@carlchenet
- Dev : I'm receiving lot of alerts. Something changed on the server of prod?
- Sys : No, I just updated old version of PHP.
- Dev : Wait, you updated from 7.2 to 7.4 ?
- Sys : Yep, lastest versions are always the most secure.
- Dev : but ...
- Sys [Out of office] : I will be back in 2 weeks. Take care.

Nikita Mazurov's guide to anonymizing Zoom videos for The Intercept tackles each of these classes of identifiers.
Traitor-tracing: Zoom meeting hosts have the option to add visual and audio watermarks to their videos.
The visual ones are perceptible - displaying your name/email on the screen so that it will be present in any video-grab - but the audio watermarks are a series of ultrasound chirps with unique identifiers in them.

With the world in lockdown, most "white-collar" crime (AKA "world-destroying corruption and looting") now takes place over Zoom. If you witness such a crime, you might be tempted to record the meeting and leak it to a journalist.
But leaking Zoom recordings is seriously fraught because they are full of personally identifying details. Some of these are "traitor-tracing" mechanisms, others are intrinsic to Zoom, and still others come from your end of the recording.

Genuine question... What is Bluesky doing which others can't do? https://cubicgarden.com/2021/01/18/what-is-bluesky-doing-which-others-cant-do/
Vous n'aimez pas les grèves? Soyez donc coherants...refusez:
@petrichor I got some reactions on tweets mentioning #ActivityPub, the #Fediverse and #Mastodon.
My guess is that people interested in these topics already made the switch and are no longer on conventional social networks.
I saw an article about an idea to put self-driving cars on the road which can drive a tiny bit slower than other cars around them, gradually allowing a large gap of antitraffic to form in front of them, which can contract to destroy a traffic jam wave.
And I was like dude I've been doing that for 10 years and I'm not an AI. You don't need an AI, you need one person in a thousand to have read Bill Beatty's traffic wave theories.

The Replay Foundation, my employer, announced their liquidation today. This means no more Pinburgh. It also means I'm Officially out of a job for the forseeable, so if y'all wouldn't mind boosting a link to my other source of income Improbable Island, that'd be just super.

It's a silly online game and it doesn't pay as much as fixing pinball machines but heck it's what I've got right now, and this winter's probably gonna be a hairy one.
