Some humans dream of starting human colonies on other planets, but what if those distant worlds have native life? Big Think's Ethan Siegel looks at the ethics of such colonization, laws that would apply in space as much as on Earth, the relevance of the "Star Trek" universe's "prime directive," and more. "Our ignorance is so great — and there are so many who value both fundamental knowledge and the personal safety of themselves and others so cheaply — that I frequently fear that it will be the most reckless among us, rather than those among us who carefully consider and scrupulously reckon with these issues, who will ultimately be the first to engage in genuine colonization efforts," he cautions.

Daniel Ozick plays the Star Trek theme music on his Zoot electronic wind instrument:
Have I ever laid out my theory that on Vulcan, sex work, while likely not a common career, would exist and be respected.
It comes down to Pon Farr. While Vulcan mating has since been show to not be strictly tied to the Pon Farr cycle, they do get potentially lethally aroused, and the only way to calm down is to either get laid or engage in potentially lethal violence.
Not every Vulcan is going to have a partner ready to go when their time comes, and Vulcan society would not want to see the random violence uncontrolled Pon Farr could result in.
So there would be sex workers standing ready to take care of Vulcans in such a state. Some might be vanilla sex workers, some would be dominants who just beat the crap out of their clients(especially those in monogamous relationships).
This would preserve the peace without requiring random Vulcans to submit to whoever grabs them just because that's where they are in their cycle. A species that values fair treatment and logic as Vulcans do, while dealing with Pon Farr, would absolutely need sanctioned sex workers to function for very long. It's the only logical solution.
