Bad news: Google is rolling out generative AI tools for video creation (Google Vids). It's turned on by default for all Google Workspace users.

Good news: If you turn off Google Vids for your domain, your users won't be able to open Vids files shared with them. Hooray for avoiding deep fakes!

Go forth and disable the latest generative AI nonesense: support.google.com/a/answer/14

Seriously, I agree with @geerlingguy and I'll refuse to buy @internetofshit / #InternetOfShit devices.

There is no legitimate reason a #Dishwasher needs #Internet access or an #App.

  • You know what my #WashingMachine needs to start (or finish) at a certain time? Me knowing how many hours it'll be from now on till it has to start (and some 2nd grade math to add the time till the program finishes)... IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A SHITTY CLOCK INSIDE!!!

Seriously, I'm just mad at this #Enshittification!

If you are sad that the term #enshittification has escaped the lab and is now used to mean everything and nothing, try the term #reintermediation and see if it captures it better and is more resilient to mutation.

It's boring and it's already a financial term that banks unashamedly think is a good thing, but I don't think #ReUnDisintermediation stands a chance, even if I'd like it to.

Maybe #CaptiveReintermediation retains more of that sinister tone.

> Students Found Out AI Will Help Read Their Names at Commencement. Protest Ensued. chronicle.com/article/students

In #ChampagneProblems. Don't get me wrong. This IS #fuckery, but they are lucky someone reads their name. When I graduated undergrad at Big Land Grant U, they just put our names on screens above stage and we all marched like cattle to get our diplomas.

Fun #enshittification artefact arising from the Carole Cadwalladr talk, “This is what a digital coup looks like”.

In it she rightly says:

“We have to learn how to digitally disobey”

and includes as an example

“Don’t accept the cookies”.

And if on iOS you block cookies and then go to ted.com/talks/carole_cadwallad

…the page doesn’t load its content except for a thumbnail of her talk and no video player.

That, and that Ted are inviting Sam Altman tells us quite a lot

One fundamental thing I wish was in more disability writings about AI, for example, this unquestioningly PR hype by @steven_aquino gets so close to hitting on the point I wish more would tackle. Even with the best technology, we're still disabled. This is ultimately why I find Techno Ableism to be particularly misleading. To be clear, he isn't peddling techno Ableism, but many in the blind community do. When this tech moves behind an expensive paywall, which, it will, the bandage for societies inaccessibility will be locked behind a steep paywall and I wish more examined what happens when #Enshittification comes for AI and how society and ableism haven't changed. curbcuts.co/blog/2025-4-9-goog #AI #AIHype

Curb CutsGoogle’s April Pixel Drop Shows how AI Can Be more Transformative than trivial pursuit — Curb CutsAs reported by 9to5 Google’s Abner Li , Google this week released its monthly Pixel Drop for Android. April’s edition brings with it but one lone feature: Gemini Live’s new Astra camera. Li writes the functionality is now available to all Pixel 9 phones, free of charge. The “Astra” name refers to

@GossiTheDog Bright side: now I get more calls from clients who pay me to turn this crap off for them. Every time #Microsoft further enshittifies #Windows with more bloatware, spyware, or slopware, I get a spike in requests to uninstall or disable it, and it becomes my primary service request for the next week or two.

Hint, for software developing companies: If people pay for the absence of a feature, then it isn’t a feature. And if your competitor continues anti-consensually imposing such misfeatures on your customer, you have the opportunity to offer a marked competitive advantage by simply not doing that.

Treat consent regarding your customers’ computers the same way anyone deserving to live outside a cage treats consent regarding others’ bodies, and you can take business away from those who are actively contemptuous of consent.
