Theoretically, regulations could have ended this practice and the disablement and death of numerous workers. But in the real world... nope.

As with sarscov2 et al, respirators would end it easily and cheaply *today*. Pity then that the companies, the regulators, nor the suffering workers themselves are interested/willing.

🔗 The increasing hazard of black lung disease facing coal miners cbsnews.com/news/the-increasin

> The Mine Safety and Health Administration, or MSHA, has proposed a new rule that would lower miners' exposure to respirable crystalline silica.

> But the proposed rule, he says, may change nothing: "It may not, because there's not any teeth in what they're doing to make the companies comply with this."

> "Roscoe" (not his real name) is a 34-year-old working coal miner who fears that he already has black lung. He contends that the mines routinely break the rules, and that if his real name came out, he's probably never have a job in the coal industry again.

> Roscoe explains what happens when an inspector comes on mine property: "Everybody's crossing their T's and dotting their I's. Everything's done right. When we're underground, and an inspector pulls up on that property, before he ever gets out of that vehicle, the dispatcher calls underground and lets every section know that there's an inspector on the property. So, by the time the inspector comes up to the section, everything's right."

> "That's been going on since I've been in the coal mine. They keep raising these dust laws and these ventilation laws for these coal companies, thinking that it's gonna help this black lung matter. But it's not."

I need to add that to my list of “Why americans are ‘cranky’” lgbtqia.space/@MxVerda/1134508

LGBTQIA.SpaceMx Verda (@MxVerda@lgbtqia.space)@tdverstynen@neuromatch.social They are exhausted, insecure, wildly unprepared, probably malnourished, frequently poisoned, and have no time, money, or energy for self-care. 🤧😵‍💫🫠 Then you have the gun violence, unaddressed c-PTSD, rigid societal demands, normalisation of shouting and mockery, hostile design in public spaces, emphasis on consumerism, over-individualising faults, etc. 🔫🫨🤕 . Finally, SARS-Cov-2. A systemic infection is already an unpleasant, potentially deadly experience at the best of times. 🤢🤒😵 It’s a multiplicative effect on organ damage per reinfection, even with adequate rest between them, which most Americans and residents will not have gotten. 🫁🫀🧠 https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2311330 https://covid19.nih.gov/news-and-stories/long-term-effects-sars-cov-2-organs-and-energy . And now we have inarguable climate collapse, The Polycrisis, whatever tf is going on with pensions and fossil fuel companies these days, and any personal challenges. Also bird flu, mpox, and zoonoses more widely. 🐓😷🗣️ https://zeroes.ca/@broadwaybabyto/113474592521503889 . Oh yeah. Disabilities often went undiagnosed anyway (for which “support” is nigh-exclusively perfunctory) and none of us get enough sleep. 🛌 😴💤 . About US politics specifically: THE VOTER SUPPRESSION. Gerrymandering / redlining, economic control, "pull yourself up into the sky by your bootstraps alone" = "do an obviously impossible thing", enshittification, and probably more. Also not being able to take time off to go vote, whether from class, work, caring responsibilities, or transport access. If your household has one or no car, then it's public transport for you, if you can afford the ticket. Best hope you're "allowed" to wear a KN95 or FFP3 respirator, or you risk further organ damage from a preventable coronavirus.
