I had to replace my #motorcycle battery today because I killed the old one by leaving the key in the ignition and discharging it all the way—several times—but this gave me the opportunity for a new #achievementUnlocked: for the first time I have added the acid to a new (AGM) lead acid battery, successfully and without injuring myself.
Apparently they turn over "power-sport batteries" so slowly that they need to leave them dry until they're bought so they don't wear out on the shelf.

Well, I’ve had an adventure this evening…

Finished work, went out to the bike, started the bike. All good so far. Then I moved the bike and it died. Dead. Is no more. Has ceased to be. Bereft of life, it rests in peace and is an ex-parrot (bike).

I do the usual, check all the fuses, check the battery connection and still nothing. No life at all.

So I called the breakdown service who promptly turned up. He was baffled too until he wiggled the ignition wiring and the electrics sprung to life for a second. We both were then 99% sure what the problem was…broken wire.

The only problem is that where the break was, was an absolute bugger to get to. We had to remove the right hand fairing, the whole dash and unbolt the radiator.

Once that was done, the repair was straightforward and then we put it all back together.

The ride home was fine, no problems at all.

This is why I pay for breakdown cover. When you don’t use it, you question having it, but it’s such a relief when you do need it. Without it, I’d have had to find a way to get it to a garage I trust and pay for the repair and it certainly wouldn’t have been back on the road this quickly. All of that would probably have cost me more than my annual breakdown cover cost.

I’m also a little bit relieved that it happened. It probably contributed to my electrical problems from a few weeks ago. I’m also grateful that it happened at work and not on the road. I don’t think they would have stripped the bike down like that at the roadside.

In the end though, it’s all good.

Emilio Scotto (Buenos Aires, September 27, 1954) is an Argentine adventurer, photojournalist, and writer. As of 2009 he holds the Guinness record for the world's longest motorcycle ride, spanning 10 years, 214 countries and a total distance of 457,000 miles (735,000 km). The ride was done on a 1980 Honda Gold Wing GL1100 motorcycle Scotto calls "Black Princess", which now sits in the Don's Riverside Car Museum in Laughlin, Nevada. Scotto recounted his travels in a 224-page book illustrated with his photographs, The Longest Ride: My Ten-Year 500,000 Mile Motorcycle Journey, published in 2007.

With my sewing skills, I will be sewing patches.

Maybe it’s time for a Mastodon Outlaw #motorcycle club.

I may have to start the first chapter, design the patches, set the bylaws, and maybe find a brother or sister to ride with.
